Manager’s Thoughts – Sedgefield, Thursday

After a quiet spell, we’re back in action today with two runners heading to Sedgefield, and it’s great to see the Ursa colours back on track. We start with Genbu in the 1:42 for Sam England, ridden by Charlie Maggs, and later in the 3.40 we have Newport making his debut for Iain Jardine, partnered by Sean Quinlan.

Genbu has always given us the impression he’d thrive with some cut in the ground, and we finally get the conditions he’s been waiting for. His reputation at home has suggested he’d appreciate softer going, so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes now he’s got it. The plan will likely be to go forward, and we’ll just need him to settle into a good rhythm early on. None of the field have proven form on soft ground, which could work in our favour. The favourite looks short enough in the betting — and having been a non-runner on similar going before — so we’re hopeful Genbu can take his chance and run a big race.

Newport,(pictured below) meanwhile, makes his first start for us today. It’s been quite some time since he’s encountered soft ground, but he’s been schooling and working well at home, settling nicely into his routine. Today will be a bit of a learning experience for all involved, but with what we’ve seen in his homework, there’s reason to believe he can put in a positive performance and give us something to build on for the season ahead.

It’s great to be back racing again after a quiet week, and we’re looking forward to seeing both horses represent the team. Best of luck to all connections and everyone making the trip to Sedgefield today!
